Day 5 Dent to Ravonstonedale

Today is supposed to be foul weather: wind, rain, low cloud.

Packed away early and on our way For 6.30

Chris is prepared for wet weather, I decide to wait until the wet weather finds us

Walking through sleepy Dent village

Passing the Sun Inn brings back memories of walking the Dales Way with Sue and the children

The sky looks threatening, but bits of blue also. Dentdale is just so lush and green, it’s a delight; albeit with some threat

Rain still holding off, Chris decides he is overdressed

Our first sight of the Howgill Fells, in the cloud. We had discussed taking a lower level alternate route, and this confirms that decision

We arrive in Sedbergh just after 8. There is a small market where we buy provisions for two days lunches

No cafes are open, but the church is doing a coffee morning. Only £1 for tea or coffee, biscuits, and some most delicious simnel cup cakes. It’s a great atmosphere, and we leave a larger donation

Car crash!

This is outside the fire station and I assume part of a training exercise

The low level alternative is a very nice route, initially along the valley bottom

Past cascading streams

Through golden hillsides of gorse

Puddles full of tadpoles

Rivers crossed by ford

All in all a high quality route

The route crosses the Howgills via Wandale and then dropping into Ravenstone Dale. Wandale, without a road, is quite repopulated and full of old abandoned farm houses

All in all the rain has mostly held off and we feel quite lucky

We reach the village of Ravenstone and have a cheeky half in the Black Swan

before pitching our tents in a nearby campsite. They have opened a day early especially for us, and the facilities are superb

We return to the Black Swan for an excellent penultimate night meal
